Job Title: Instructor in French Language and Culture / First-Year French Supervisor

Job Rank: Instructor

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics

Required Language(s): French (fra)

Description:

The Department of Romance Languages anticipates hiring a full-time Career Instructor in French Language and Culture to teach and coordinate undergraduate language and culture classes at the first-year level. The position also includes supervision of Graduate Teaching Fellows and cooperative program articulation across language levels. The one-year, renewable contract begins September 15, 2014. A full course load for a language supervisor is two classes per quarter (six per year) in addition to first-year French language program coordination and supervision (both regular and intensive first-year sequences).

This position is not tenure track; the initial one-year contract is renewable contingent on excellent performance, budgetary approval, and staffing needs.

Minimum requirements: M.A. in applied linguistics, French or related field in hand before start date, professional-level proficiency in both French and English, and documented successful college-level teaching experience.

Preference will be given to candidates with documented satisfactory (1) supervisory experience and (2) experience in curriculum development, program articulation, proficiency assessment, French linguistics (e.g., phonetics, sociolinguistics, history of the French language), placement testing, service learning, or other areas of program development.

The successful candidate will be expected to introduce students to the cultures of France and other French-speaking countries, and to contribute to language clubs, study abroad, and/or other cultural exchange initiatives as needed.

Our multi-sectioned programs require creative teachers who work well in a collaborative environment with both graduate teaching fellows and faculty (both non-tenured and tenured). Candidates should submit a teaching portfolio with a cover letter, CV, three current letters of recommendation, recent evaluations from both students and graduate assistants whom you have supervised, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a video recording of you teaching a full class meeting of a French language class (preferably first-year) to the application website below.

To ensure consideration, please submit application materials by May 30, 2014. The position will remain open until filled. The position is contingent upon budgetary approval.

The University of Oregon is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution committed to cultural diversity and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Candidates who promote and enhance diversity are strongly desired.
