The department of Languages, Literature and Communication of Utrecht University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as assistant professor in Language change, starting September 1, 2014, to be appointed in the Linguistics section of the department. Candidates work in the field of language variation, language change, with knowledge of geolinguistics, language contact and/or multilingualism. Candidates have outstanding knowledge of quantitative research methods.

Your teaching obligations will be in the area of sociolinguistics, language variation and change, multilingualism, language contact, and language policy. You will primarily teach in the Linguistics programme, but also in Language and Culture Studies, Liberal Arts and Sciences, as well as the master programmes Multilingualism and Language acquisition, Intercultural communication and the research Master Linguistics.

In due course you will be expected to fulfill coordinating/administrative duties within the linguistics programme(s) and occasionally in the department. Your research will be part of the Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS (UiLOTS). The position compromises 70% teaching and 30% research. Successful applicants with outstanding research credentials may qualify for 40% research.

We require:
- Extensive experience in teaching sociolinguistics, both at BA and MA level;
- Extensive research experience in this area, proven by a finished PhD (or in final phase of completion) and publications at an internationally recognised level;
- Experience with successful applications for external funding is recommended;
- Experience in a coordinating position is recommended;
- Good communication skills;
- Fluency in English
- (Dutch) University Teaching Qualification. If not, being prepared to obtain it (UTQ program available within the Department);
- Non-Dutch candidates are required to reach fluency in Dutch within two years of appointment.

We offer a full-time appointment for one year (part-time is negotiable), during which you are expected to obtain basic teaching qualifications. Given satisfactory performance within that period, the appointment will become a permanent appointment. Depending on your knowledge and experience, your (full-time) monthly gross salary will be between € 3.259 and € 5.070 (scale 11/12 according to the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities).

The Utrecht University Humanities faculty is divided into four departments, including the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication (TLC), which monitors BA and MA programmes in the areas of Celtic, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish language and culture; Linguistics, Literary Studies; as well as Communication and Information Sciences and Artificial Intelligence.
