Re Spanish word-processing software: Microsoft Word for Windows 2.0 has not only Spanish fonts but a Spanish spelling checker and thesaurus. However, if you buy the product in the US, you get English only, and the Spanish will cost you a bit extra. If you buy the product in Spain or S. America, the standard system will include the Spanish software. It is advisable to check with your vendor what you are getting. The foreign language software in the US is about $60.- or so per language, if memory serves me right, but there are discounts available at university stores in many places (I can't give you precise cost figures, unfortunately, since they seem to vary). I do know, however, that the Spanish spelling checker is very extensive. I have no experience with the thesaurus. Re: Adobe Fonts (more) Alas, they do not seem to work with Quark Express. I had hoped to use Quark as the font requires a program that supports kerning, but Renner chose a strange approach to kerning, leaving the diacritic a full character to the right and pulloing it all the way over. But Quark supports kerning only up to .5 character or so. Why the font wasn't designed with zero-width diacritics baffles me, but I have written (semi-flamed) Adobe and hope to have more news soon. I have not tried it with Word Perfect 2.1 because my upgrade has not arrived yet. As for Nisus, I expect we need to wait for version 4.0 but I am working with some of their people on some suggestions to make the program even more useful to linguists. As for Microsoft, who knows? On the positive side, I have approached Adobe on pricing and they assure me that there are good Academic discounts, but that a package price for the Stone family including IPA will be taken under consideration. Those who wish to nag should note that Adobe has an easy to remember Internet address: adobe.com. Eric SchillerMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
