Is anyone out there interested in discussing the teaching of linguistics at the Master's level and the direction or design of M.A. linguistics programs? As part of its assessment effort, our program at Eastern Michigan U. has just been given a small grant to start an e-mail discussion list devoted to the special concerns and challenges of master's-level linguistics programs: e.g., curriculum (including design of individual courses), exam and thesis requirements, student recruitment, placement of graduates, etc., etc. We could share ideas on virtually anything, including syllabi and exams for individual courses. Right now, I'm anticipating that the discussion will last only 6-8 months. That is, I'm conceiving of the interchange more as an e-mail conference than an ongoing list. However, this is something that the participants can decide later if they wish. SO: if you're a director, graduate advisor, or teacher in an M.A. linguistics program, let me know if you might be interested in joining such a list. Please send replies to my personal e-mail address below (this new list is not connected to LINGUIST): hdryMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueemunix.emich.edu I look forward to hearing from you. -Helen
