The Department of Linguistics at the University of Sydney invites
applications from qualified candidates for lectureships in Linguistics:

Lectureship (fixed-term) in Applied Linguistics -- Reference No. A34/02:

To participate in teaching and research in the postgraduate program in
Applied Linguistics with local and overseas students. Applicants should
have a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics/Linguistics with special interest in
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Expertise in second
language acquisition and language testing is expected. Experience in the
following areas is desirable: language for specific purposes; language
teaching methodology; classroom research. Semantic and sociolinguistic
approaches to language description are strong interests in the department.
Preference will be given to candidates with substantial publications.
Position available for three years. Salary $A41,000 - $48,688 per annum
($A1 = $US .73).

Lectureship (fixed-term) in Sociolinguistics -- Reference No. A34/01:

To teach and supervise students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate
levels. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Linguistics with a specialisation
in sociolinguistics, especially variation theory. Other areas of interest
could include pidgins and creoles and ethnography of speaking. Position
available for three years. Salary $A41,000 - $48,688 per annum ($A1 = $US
.73).

The Department of Computer Science, University of Ottawa, invites
applications for a postdoctoral position on the project "Machine Learning and
Text Analysis for Semi-automatic Knowledge Acquisition". Candidates must
have a completed Ph.D., a strong background in Machine Learning and Natural
Language Processing, and a record of research in at least one of these areas.
The position is available for a year, with a possibility of renewal for
another year. The salary is CDN $ 27,500/year, plus an excellent benefit
package.

The postdoctoral fellow will be an essential member of the project's team,
now consisting of two faculty, a postdoc and a few graduate students, and
will play an active role in all aspects of the project, including the major
research decisions. Duties include participation in the design and
development of a prototype system, in supervision of graduate students who
will work on the project, and in the publications that will arise from the
project.
