LINGUISTICS ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN Spring Meeting 1993: University of Birmingham The 1993 Spring Meeting will be held from Monday 22 March to Wednesday 24 March at the University of Birmingham, where the Association will be the guests of the Cognitive Science Research Centre. There is also a bar in the Hall. All bedrooms have washbasins and razor points. Car parking is available directly outside the Hall. A maximum of 130 people can be accommodated in residence. A small number of twin rooms are available: if you require one please inform the Local Organizer on your booking form. Travel: Birmingham New Street BR station is most convenient for the meeting: participants should travel to the campus by taxi, a cost of around (pounds) 4.50. Alternatively, the BR station on campus, University Station, is about 1 mile walk from Lake Hall. More detailed information is sent out in the registration package. Registration will begin on Monday 22 March at 11.00 in Lake Hall. Any late arrivals should simply report to the Hall. Events: There will be a workshop before the meeting, on the topic of Disjoint Indexing: Cross-over, Principles B and C, and 'free in a domain'. The speakers will be Joseph Edmonds, Paul Postal, and Ruth Kempson. Professor Emonds will also deliver the Linguistics Association 1993 Lecture, entitled: The nature of syntactic indices and disjoint reference', on the evening of Monday 22 March. In addition, Professor Postal will be speaking on the evening of Tuesday 23 March, on 'A novel extraction typology'. Parasessions: There will be a Linguistics in Education parasession on Language description and prescription in the English and Modern Languages classroom. Speakers are Chris Brumfit, Ros Mitchell and Janet Hooper. On the afternoon of Wednesday 24 March there will be a parasession on Linguistics and Cognitive Science. Speakers will include Gerry Altmann (Sussex) and William Edmondson (Birmingham). The University is also host to the 1993 meeting of the Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and the Simulation of Behaviour (AISB), from 29 March to 2 April. There will be a pre- session to this on Monday 29 March, when the Joint Council for Initiatives in Cognitive Science has its annual meeting. The first presentation is by Professor Gerald Gazdar of the University of Sussex.
