Readers of LINGUIST may well be interested in the following report. Blazhe Koneski was a leading linguist and poet in Skopje, Macedonia. Born in 1921, he as a very young man did the major work on standardizing the Macedonian (Slavic) language when that became possible in late World War II Yugoslavia (1944). Since then the language has thrived, despite some of its neighbors officially not recognizing it, and is the main language of the newly indepent Republic of Macedonia.
