THE LANGUAGE-GENDER INTERFACE: THEORIES & METHODS FOR RESEARCH & TEACHING CONFERENCE, JULY 16-18,1993 COLUMBUS, OHIO ABSTRACTS DUE MARCH 26 The Committee on the Status of Women In Linguistics (COSWL) of the Linguistic Society of America is sponsoring "The Language-Gender Interface: Theories and Methods For Research and Teaching," A conference to be held on July 16-18 in conjunction with the 1993 Linguistic Institute in Columbus, Ohio. In keeping with the institute theme of "interfaces," the focus of this conference will be on the interface between language and gender research, as well as on the interfaces between gender and such categories as race, ethnicity, class, age, and sexuality; between different areas of linguistics; between linguistics and other disciplines; and between theoretical frameworks and research methods. We invite abstracts that focus specifically on the linguistic perspectives and methods in language and gender research. As well as encouraging excellence in research and writing on issues of language and gender, COSWL desires a diverse body of speakers and papers which extend the range of situations and populations presently analyzed in language and gender research--we particularly invite submissions from people from historically underrepresented groups. We also hope to present a small number of short workshops, e.g., on teaching language and gender; language and gender, sex, and sexuality; women's career advancement; etc. If you would like to propose a workshop, contact the conference organizers. ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Abstracts must fit on one page and be no longer than 500 words. See the guidelines for "abstract contents" in the annual December issue of the LSA Bulletin for advice on organizing an abstract.) Abstracts may be submitted either by mail or by e-mail, although mail submission is much preferred. All abstracts will be blind reviewed. By mail: Submit five (5) copies of the abstract; each copy should be headed with the title, but only the first copy should contain the speaker's name and affiliation. To the first page, paper clip a 3X5" card containing the following information: paper title, name, affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address (if used regularly), phone number(s), fax number (if available). Optional: Please identify whether you are a member of a historically underrepresented group: e.g., native american, african-american, hispanic-american, lesbian, gay, bisexual, handicapped, unemployed, working class, etc. By e-mail: follow directions above for submission by mail, except submit only one e-mail copy of the abstract and of the identifying information in plain, unformatted text. avoid diacritics and other special typographic information.
