ANNOUNCEMENT CONFERENCE ON ASIA-MAINLAND/AUSTRONESIAN CONNECTIONS (CAMAC) Department of Linguistics The Social Science Research Institute The University of Hawai`i May 10-14, 1993 This Conference, which is planned to coincide with the end of the SEALS III Conference in Honolulu, will examine each of the major hypotheses of the relationship between the Austronesian language family and other language families, specifically the Austric Hypothesis (Austronesian and Austroasiatic), Austro-Tai (Austronesian and Tai-Kadai), Sino-Austronesian, and Austro-Japannese. The main presentations will be given by prominent proponents of each of these hypotheses, to be followed by discussion periods in which the methodology and proposed evidence will be critically examined, and counter-proposals discussed. Archaeologists, physical anthropologists and pre-historians interested in these questions are also invited to make presentations of their latest research and theories in order to compare them with the linguistic theories. Scholars interested in participating, either as presenters, or members of discussion panels are asked to contact, as soon as possible, the conference organizer: Lawrence A. Reid, Department of Linguistics, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA (reidMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueuhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu). The conference will be held in the Ocean Resort Hotel, Waikiki. Very favorable room rates (from $48 plus tax, single/double) are available if reservations are made through the conference organizers). The conference registration fee will be $40, or $20 for students. National Science Foundation funding has been requested.
