Computer Bulletin Boards for Individual Languages Prepared by Bernard Comrie Version of 7 May 1993 I apologize for the delay in distributing this summary, in part the result of checking as many of the entries as possible--though there are no doubt remaining errors in my listing--in part the result of other commitments. I am grateful to all respondents to my request for information. I have restricted this listing to bulletin boards devoted primarily to the linguistic study of individual languages and groups of languages (though I have slipped in a couple of other things that attracted my attention, in particular lists for language learners). I hope that other correspondents to LINGUIST will be encouraged to maintain corresponding lists for branches of linguistics, particular approaches to linguistics, language teaching, etc. The usual way of subscribing to a list is to send the following message to the listserver (not to the address for enquiries): SUBSCRIBE <name of list> <your first name> <your last name> In my listing below, the name of the list is given in capitals/upper case and in round brackets/parentheses. When you subscribe, you will receive instructions on how to contribute to the list, and on how to remove your name from the subscription list (usually: SIGNOFF <name of list>). A list of mailing lists available on Internet is available by anonymous ftp from ftp.nisc.sri.com (192.33.33.32) in the file /netinfo/ interest-groups. A directory of scholarly electronic conferences is maintained by Diane K. Kovacs (dkovacsMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuekentvm.bitnet or
kentvm.kent.edu) and is available by sending the message get acadlist readme to one of the following addresses: listserv
kentvm.bitnet listserv
kentvm.kent.edu The materials you will receive include instructions for getting more detailed descriptions of particular sets of electronic conferences (e.g. LANGUAGES, LINGUISTICS). Those interested in contacting speakers of languages (not necessarily linguists) should also consider contacting the appropriate soc.culture list (e.g. soc.culture.polish). Finally, before the listing itself, a request: Is there someone out there would be interested in helping me to maintain this list? I am not a good person to do this on my own, as I spend substantial portions of my time in places where I have limited or no access to e-mail. If you are interested, please contact me (comrie
