LECTURESHIP IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE PEDAGOGY
(TENURABLE)

Applications are invited for a Lectureship in Applied Linguistics
with special emphasis on language pedagogy. Applicants should have
post-graduate qualifications in Applied Linguistics, together with
relevant teaching experience and research. The appointee will be
responsible for courses in the area of language pedagogy in the
Graduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and M.A. coursework
programs, for supervising research dissertations, and for
developing major programs of research in the Centre for Language
Teaching and Research.

Preference may be given to applicants who combine expertise in
both the non-English and ESL language teaching areas.

Starting date: January 1, 1994
Salary: $A41,000 - $A48,688/annum

NATURAL LANGUAGE UNDERSTANDING

The Microsoft Institute of Advanced Software Technology is a 'not for profit'
subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation established in Sydney, Australia.
The Microsoft Institute is formally affiliated with Macquarie University
and, as a result, has an active basic research program.

The Microsoft Institute is seeking to appoint a scientist in
Computational Linguistics to lead an active research program that will
make an original contribution in this field. The successful applicant will
have an appropriate research PhD in computer based Natural Language
Understanding and will have established a presence in their field
through publication and conference presentation. In particular, they
will be energetic and committed to building a research unit of
international reputation. The Unit is already established in Sydney with
a team of four outstanding PhD students and appropriate software and
equipment, it now needs a scientist with vision and direction to unify
and direct the research.

The position offers the opportunity to collaborate directly with the
Natural Language Group in the Microsoft research laboratories in Seattle
and contribute to fundamental work that should influence the direction of
the industry.

Appointments to the position of Unit Head will be for an initial
period of three years. A salary package of around $A75,000 would be
provided which is equivalent to a full Chair in an Australian University.

 OTS (Research Institute for Language and Speech)

 Research Assistant in Robust Language Processing

Applications are invited for a post of Research Assistant to work
on a collaborative project sponsored by the Commission of the
European Communities. Project partners are OTS, CWARC (Montreal)
and SITE (Paris).

The title of the project is:
 Robustness: Combining Linguistic and Statistical Knowledge
 (CLASK)

Duration: May 1993 - May 1995

Aims of the project:
 (a) Qualitative improvement of robust probabilistic NLP
 systems by means of addition of linguistic knowledge,
 and
 (b) the production of robust variants of grammar based
 systems by means of addition of probabilistic knowledge.

Provisions:
 The OTS offers an inspiring research environment with a
 number of ongoing NLP projects, ranging from basic to more
 application oriented research. Excellent equipment provision
 and ample opportunity for travel and conference visits.

Requirements:
 - Good knowledge of statistics
 - MA in Computational Linguistics or equivalent
 - Experience in UNIX, Prolog, C
 - Research experience

Salary and starting date:
 Starting salary will depend on age and experience.
 Starting date as soon as possible.
