CRITICAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION The Committee on the Status of Women in Linguistics (COSWL), an advisory committee to the Linguistic Society of America, invites you to attend a conference, "The Language-Gender Interface: Theories and Methods for Research and Teaching." This will be held at the Ohio State University campus in Columbus, as part of the 1993 Linguistic Institute. We have just been informed that many airlines are presently offering FARE SPECIALS; YOU MAY WANT TO BOOK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE following gives you an overview of some of the critical conference information. Official forms for registration, housing, banquets, workshop preregistration, and directions will be sent soon by e-mail and regular mail. In all, we recommend that you come in no later than Thursday, July 15 and stay through the full day of Sunday, July 18 to cover all the exciting work presented. DATES: The conference will begin with registration and an informal reception on Thursday evening; papers begin promptly at 9 am on Friday, July 16, and run throughout Friday and Saturday in a single session (no parallel sessions). (It was difficult to limit ourselves to only twenty-four papers to accommodate our desire to foster a communal discussion, but we believe we have selected some very fine current work that covers a broad spectrum of linguistically focused work on gender issues.) We also are planning a banquet and an open COSWL meeting on Friday evening, and a plenary talk and party on Saturday evening. Workshops will take place on Sunday morning, and we will close with a final wrap-up assessment early on Sunday afternoon. PLENARY: We are trying to complete final arrangements to bring Deborah Cameron over from England as a our speaker for Saturday night. Her works include _Feminism_and_Linguistic Theory_, now in its second edition, _The_Feminist_Critique_ of_Language:_A_Reader, and Women_in_their_Speech_Communities (with Jennifer Coates). There is a possibility that Jennifer Coates may also be available. Sally McConnell- Ginet and Penelope Eckert will present a plenary talk to the INSTITUTE ON TUESDAY, JULY 20; YOU MAY WISH TO STAY IN COLUMBUS TO HEAR THEM. WE ALSO PLAN TO HAVE THEM provide commentary at the conference itself. WORKSHOPS: Present plans for workshops include sessions on language and gender syllabi, pedagogical issues, research methods in language and gender, how to write LSA abstracts, and career issues for women (plus more); all workshops will be included in the registration price, except for the cost of photocopying of any materials. Preregistration materials will be sent out soon for them. There will also be a day of papers and workshops on Sunday, July 18, in a separate but related session on lesbian language(s) and perhaps on gay language. The organizers of those parasessions may piggyback information with our mailings to you later. HOUSING is available through the OSU dormitories. (Sorry, no motels are available on those dates; there is a "streetrod" convention which had everything booked since early last summer.) We recommend the airconditioned rooms. North Dorms (air conditioned, private bathrooms; closer to conference site) single double (per person) daily rate $26.00/night $16.25/night weekly rate $136.00/week $85.00/week (2 wk. min.) South Dorms (no air conditioning; fans only; shared baths) single double (per person) daily rate $18.00/night $9.50/night weekly rate $94.50/week $49.00/week (2 wk.min.) The housing form may be taken from the OSU Linguistic Institute booklet, or will be sent to you in the mail along with official registration information. REGISTRATION will cost $40 for faculty and employed persons, $20 FOR STUDENTS AND UNEMPLOYED PERSONS, WITH A $5 SURCHARGE FOR registrations after June 21 and $5 off for all who are registered as Linguistic Institute participants. This amount includes all breaks, the conference program (abstracts and addresses), receptions, and workshop costs except extra photocopying charges. Banquet fees will be extra (about $10-15).
