TENURED FULL PROFESSOR OF LANGUAGE STUDIES
(Foundation Chair), to run a newly constituted School of Languages
within the Faculty of Arts at Melbourne University, Parkville, Victoria,
3052, Australia. The School incorporates all the former language
departments (Arabic, Chinese, ESL, French, German, Indonesian, Italian,
Japanese, and Russian, applied linguistics and language studies, and the
Horwood Language Centre) and has a new charge to serve the language
needs of all students and to prepare teachers for the state-mandated P-10
program (required language study from primary school through Year 10).
The candidate will be either an applied linguist or a specialist in language
teaching in one of the languages taught in the school (someone in Spanish
and Applied Linguistics could apply, but should probably add ESL, in the
expectation of trying to add Spanish to the list). The candidate should have
an established international reputation, a substantial research record, and a
capacity to exercise academic leadership. The appointee will be expected
to be the administrative and academic Head of the School of Languages
for four to five years.

TENURED FULL PROFESSORS TO HEAD THE FRENCH AND
GERMAN are also being sought (Chinese in 1994) - in other words a new
leadership and a new approach to prevent dilution by heldover
conservative elements. For the French and German, candidates may be
linguists, applied linguists, literary scholars, or specialists in
civilisation/cultural studies. This is a great opportunity to put into action a
model for the language departments of the future, with the full support of
the Vice-Chancellor (President) of the University, David Penington.
Deadline for applications is 15th June, 1993, but an expression of interest
in applying received by that date will qualify for late application. For
further information on conditions of appointment, write to the Registrar,
University of Melbourne, Parkville, Vic. 3052, Australia. For further
information on the School, contact Ivan Barko on FAX 61-3 347 2613, or
by e-mail (INTERNET) barkolanguage.unimelb.edu.au. For further
discussion of the background, the university, the Australian academic
scene, call Wilga M. Rivers, Tel/FAX (617) 924 0370. Please publicize.
