A little while ago, i posted a query soliciting recommendations for good Finnish-English dictionaries. I got 14 responses, and would like to thank: Laurie Bauer, James E. Cathey, Sheila Embleton, Helena Halmari, Timo Haukioja, Pirkko Kukkonen, Jouko Linstedt, Diane Nelson, Richard Ogden, Tapani Salminen, Taina Saarinen, Larry Trask, Trond Trosterud, and Helena Valtanen. Nine people recommended a (literally) large dictionary published (most recently apparently in 1988) by Werner Doserstrom Osakeyhtio: Hurme, Raija, Riita-Leena Malin, & Olli Syvaoja. Uusi suomi-englanti suursanakirja. Porvoo: Werner Soderstrom Osakeyhtio. ISBN: 951-0-12157-6 and 951-0-12158-4. xxiv + 1446 p. (apparently in two volumes, Finnish-English and English-Finnish) There were seven recommendations for a somewhat smaller (492 p.?) dictionary published (most recently 1989?): Wuolle, Aino. Suomalais-englantilainen opiskelusanakirja/Finnish-English Study Dictionary. published in various places by various houses, including Werner Soderstrom Osakeyhtio and Holt, Reinhart, & Winston. (9 + 7 > 14; some people recommended both) There is, not surprisingly, a significant price difference between these two. The Hurme, Malin, & Syvaoja work normally runs over US$100, which places it outside my reach at this time. So i'm now tracking down the Wuolle dictionary, for which my informants quote prices ranging from US$8--25. Again, thanks to all respondents. ------ Dr. Steven Schaufele c/o Department of Linguistics 712 West Washington Ave. University of Illinois Urbana, IL 61801 4088 Foreign Languages Building 707 South Mathews Street 217-344-8240 Urbana, IL 61801 fcoswsMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueux1.cso.uiuc.edu
