Dear colleagues! I just really don't know whether LINGUIST is the right forum to send this message to, but I can't help asking my American colleagues out there to tell me whether the Department of Linguistics at MIT is really in danger of extinction or something of the sort. Namely, there is an appeal circulating in Japan for fund raising to assist the most famous linguistics department in the world. I wonder if this is simply a Japanese phenomenon. Or is there a world-wide campaign going on to help MIT's linguistics department? At the last meeting of the Linguistic Society of Japan four weeks ago, we were told that the Linguistic Society of Japan was in financial trouble, and that there was some fear of the possibility that the society would have to cancel some of its biannual meetings in the near future. I haven't heard of any similar fund-raising campaign going on for our linguistics society, however. I'd be happy if someone would help me decide whether to donate my ten thousand yen ($95) to MIT or to our own linguistics society or perhaps the same amount to both. I'm also interested to know the opinions of my Japanese colleagues on LINGUIST. A Japanese proverb has it that you had better fan a fly away from your own head first. I am currently working on linguistic deception and manipulation -but not deception detection and the like. I've been trying to find recent publications on the subject - I haven't been very successful. Can anyone help me? Thanks. Good day, A friend of mine would appreciate it very much if she could receive information on linguistic conferences and researchers in the countries of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore as well as in Beijing (PR of China) and in Bangkok (Thailand). She will be traveling in those countries beginning on July 15 and 8-9 months thereon. Any travel info on those countries is also warmly appreciated. Her main interests of study are intercultural/cross-cultural communication, foreign language oral communication, and Chinese communication research. Please send any piece of advice directly to her by email at: saloleeMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuejyu.fi. Thank you very much in advance, --Jari jpe
