We are writing in partial reply to Prof. Matsumura's questions concerning our department in a recent LINGUIST. The MIT Linguistics group is in not the slightest danger of extinction. On the contrary, we have actively expanded our research and teaching program in recent years. Despite these difficult economic times for universities, we are financially and administratively secure. Like many research groups and graduate programs in American universities, however, we are actively looking to expand the possibilities for graduate student support, and to ensure that current levels of support can continue in the future. Additionally, we are launching new research initiatives in the study of language, in collaboration with our colleagues in other departments. The group to which you have referred has information concerning these plans, and I urge you to contact that group or our department for more information. We are alarmed by the news that the Linguistic Society of Japan is in difficulty, and we join with you in urging your colleagues to help restore this important body to financial health.
