I am writing an article on artificial intelligence, and on how the metaphorical use of language has affected development. As an example, computers are said to possess a "brain" and "memory", exhibit "intelligent behavior", and "learn by experience". What I am interested in is how the heavily anthropomorphic vocabulary has affected the claims by AI researchers that "artifiical life" is indeed alive, and also, equivalent to biological life. If anyone out there has done research on how vocabulary, particularly newly coined words, affects technology and the pace of development, I would be interested in knowing a) what research materials (books, magazines, conference proceedings) are concerned with this topic b) other instances when an invented vocabulary affects progress in a field. Thanks!
