I am, currently, working on Tamil morphosyntax; and would like to communicate
with those who are researching on the Dravidian languages, particularly, on
Tamil. So, I would appreciate any response to this brief note ( which is the
first posting from me to the Linguist).

Also, I would be grateful if somebody could send me some references to current
research on Tamil, especially works based on GB.

Last week I posted an inquiry to LINGUIST requestion information about M
the state of Machine Translation work today. I will post a summary soon, but
in the responses I am getting from my linguist inquiry, there is tremendous
skepticism, and pessimism from most writers, but no explicit explanation for
the lack of progress in this area. Does anyone out there know
exactly what the problem is? What is causing the block to progress in this
area? Do you know of specific problems with specific examples?

I would appreciate any help or bibliographic references on Western Fijian d
dialects. Wayan for example. I would be very interested in any grammars
or descriptions of some of these dialects

Semi-serious query: Any references in the literature yet to Klingon
language? Does it resemble any natural language in syntax or
phonetics? I'm not a Trekkie, but my doctor is. Just before I
was wheeled into surgery last week (nothing serious), he got a fax
of a newspaper article about a Klingon camp, where the language was
spoken, the reporter said. My doctor stopped to listen to the
some Klingonese by dialing The Washington Post's Sound
Bite facility.
