CRL - Computing Research Laboratory Lead Scientist/Director An outstanding senior scientist is sought to direct the Computing Research Laboratory (CRL) at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico. Although only ten years old, CRL has become an internationally known Artificial Intelligence center with extensive funding from national and international sources. The Laboratory primarily focuses on research and development in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science with specific emphasis on natural language understanding, connectionism, information retrieval, interface design, knowledge representation, and reasoning. The Laboratory currently consists of a full-time director, fifteen affiliated faculty from various departments, twelve full-time researchers, and a number of graduate and undergraduate student research assistants and hardware/software technicians. Equipment currently available on campus to members of CRL includes an extensive network of Sun workstations, a 20 processor Sequent Symmetry, and a Cray ELC. Network access to a number of other large scale experimental machines is also available. Applicants should have research expertise in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence or a closely related field and the ability to manage an interdisciplinary research facility. The director will have leadership and management responsibility for all aspects of the laboratory's activities and will: (a) lead a personal research team, (b) guide all research activity in the laboratory, (c) coordinate the interdisciplinary academic activities of the laboratory, (d) foster a proposed graduate program in cognitive science, (e) represent the laboratory to the university, government, and industry, and (f) recruit new faculty, staff, and graduate students for the laboratory. The successful applicant will be appointed to a tenured position in an appropriate department. The Laboratory maintains a close working relationship with several academic departments, including Computer Science, Psychology, Mathematical Sciences, Languages and Linguistics, and Philosophy.
