I am posting this query for a colleague in our Center for Advanced Computer Studies, so please reply directly to me. Does anyone know when and where parentheses first occur in an orthographic system? This question is not limited to the use of parentheses for parenthetical comments in a written message. For example, in the early Arab texts on algebra, what mark performed the function that parentheses serve today? We will appreciate your responses. The posting asking about P-marker fonts available for Mac has reminded me that, being at a moment of decision about replacement of my present PC, I should like to know: if there is a program on Mac which will provide IPA fonts and/or allow me to create my own (as I do at present with Chiwriter on my PC). I really do need to design my own, since I use some non-IPA/US symbols. I have given up the idea of trees (depressing, as I wish to write on syllables) via Chiwriter. My apologies if I am asking what has already been asked. I have only recently decided that my PC is too slow, needs replacing and the information is needed. Thanks in advance.
