All, I have placed a revised version of a ``unification-based'' grammar development program for Apple MacIntosh in the MCL archives on the ftp server on cambridge.apple.com. You will need a copy of Apple's CommonLisp environment (called MCL2.0p2) to run this program, but I could arrange to distribute a ``stand-alone version'' which does not require the CommonLisp environment if enough people request it. The program is meant for developing and testing unification grammars similiar to the ones Shieber describes in his 1986 book ``Introduction to Unification-based Theories of Grammar'' (CSLI lecture notes). The program comes with a full graphical interface. It draws trees and feature structures as graphical objects (PICTs), which can be copied and pasted into any other document. (A number of people are just using the program to draw trees that they paste into their papers, ignoring the parser completely). For further information, either download the program from the MCL archive and read the enclosed documentation, or send me email. Further to my summary of fonts for PC or Mac, I am grateful to Dil Parkinson for pointing out to me that Fontographer works with Windows; it is not restricted to Mac. Bill Bennett.Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
In response to Bill Bennett's recent summary of producing IPA fonts on Mac and PC, I thought I would add for the general communinity that the newest version of WordPerfect for DOS (version 6.0) includes IPA fonts as one of the standard alphabets. The compose features of this version allow a wide variety of diacritics that can be added to the standard IPA symbols. This is good news for those of us who have already invested time and money into IBM-compatibles, and/or who don't really want to switch to Mac. This version does not require Windows, although the Windows version of 6.0 is due out this winter. Kimberly WeissMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
To add to Bennett and Mandelbaum: There is really no need to construct one's own fonts with one of the font constructors like Fontographer. IPA (in several versions) as well as SIL and every other Roman and non-Roman alphabet you might need are all available from Linguist's Software, PO Box 580, Edmonds, WA 98020-580 FAX (206) 771-5911Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
