This may be of interest to all linguists. from "The FINITE STRING" (The newsletter of the Association for Computational Linguistics) Vol. 19 Number 1 March 1993 p4. "LINGUISTCS AND THE LANGUAGE SCIENCES SECTION OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE Last February, the American Association for the Advancement of Science gave provisional status to a new section Linguistics and the Language Sciences. If the membership of the section totals four hundred on or before February 1995, the provisional status will be removed. To date, very few individuals have actually joined AAAS specifying that they want Section Z: Linguistics and the Language Sciences as their primary affiliation. Should you wish to join, membership applications are availbale Please contact: AAAS Tel(+1-202)326-6430 1333 H Street, NW Washington, DC 20005 USA If we do not build up section membership, Section Z will not be permitted to hold section meetings and elections of officers, which is critical now if the new section is to survive and develop. We would be glad to have any ideas you might have which could help us in building this new section. The recognition of linguistcs as a science in the AAAS took generations to achieve. Your support and help is therefore essential. Arnold Zwicky, LSA President Frederick J.
