I owe an offprint of thanks to the following: J. Bresnan; O. Jaeggli; G. Pullum; P. Postal. Unfortunately, there has been a delay in publication of the article in question and I am now no longer sure of the addresses of these colleagues (none of whom seems to be on the copy of the list of linguist subscribers that I own). I realize that my offprint is not what they are waiting for, but needs must and should. So, if anyone knows the addresses for sure perhaps they would send them to me direct. Thanks in advance Bill Bennett.Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
A colleague in Russia (Veronika Teliya) needs to contact W.Eismann of the University of Graz in Austria. Could some reader please give me Eismann's e-mail address or fax number, and I will pass them on. Many thanks, WAYLES BROWNE, ASSOC. PROF. OF LINGUISTICS DEPT. Dear Hebrew Linguists, I need your help! Could you give me your judgements on the following eight sentences? In addition, any relevant information regarding superiority phenomena in Hebrew would be very helpful. Q1: Can subject NP follow VP-adverb? (1) ['et ma] 'axal Dani bi-zhirut acc what ate D with-care 'What did Dani eat carefully?' (2) ['et ma] 'axal [VP bi-zhirut Dani] acc what ate with-care D Q2: If subject NP is a wh-phrase, can it follow VP-adverb? (3) ['et ma] 'axal mi bi-zhirut acc what ate who with-care 'What did who eat carefully?' (4) ['et ma] 'axal [VP bi-zhirut mi] acc what ate with-care who Q3: Shlonsky (1987) notes the following contrast: (i) 'et ma Dani 'axal? (ii) *'et ma mi 'axal? acc what D ate acc what who ate Are superiority effects absent (or present) when wh-phrase is extracted from the embedded clause? (matrix verb precedes matrix subject in (5) and (6)) (5) ['et ma]1 siper mi acc what say who [CP se-axal Dani [VP bi-zhirut t1]] that-ate D with-care 'What does who say that Dani ate carefully?' (6) ['et ma]1 siper mi acc what say who [CP se-Dani 'axal [VP bi-zhirut t1]] that-D ate with-care (matrix verb follows matrix subject in (7) and (8)) (7) ['et ma]1 mi siper acc what who say [CP se-axal Dani [VP bi-zhirut t1]] that-ate D with-care 'What does who say that Dani ate carefully?' (8) ['et ma]1 mi siper acc what who say [CP se-Dani 'axal [VP bi-zhirut t1]] that-D ate with-care Thank you very much. uib.no I am from Zagreb in Croatia. As a senior student in English and French I came to Trondheim in Norway to write my major in English. I was in Norway one year in 1989. Therefor I got a scholarship from Culture Department in Oslo. I shall compare English conjunction AND with Norwegian conjunction OG and four Croatian equivalents I, PA, TE and A. I am therefor very interested in all works about this conjunction. I would like to get as many information as possible about it. Your Sincerly, Zaklina Marin
