FIRST BYTE, a leader in the Text-To-Speech synthesis field, invites applications for full-time positions in linguistic systems development. First Byte linguists work on all aspects of the speech synthesis development process for a variety of languages, from analyzing phonemes set, writing letter-to-sound and stress rules, and handling special formats in the target language, to recording and processing the natural speech data that serves as the underlying source of a synthetic voice. Linguists are also involved in redesigning and enhancing our existing technology to improve the quality and accuracy of the text-to-speech conversion. Current areas of research include syntactic and morphological parsing, prosody, stress-assignment and the use of computerized corpora to improve accuracy. Linguists with backgrounds varying from B.A.s to Ph.Ds will be considered. Candidates with some experience in computer programming are preferred. Prior experience with phonetics and acoustic instrumentation (pitch trackers, wave-form editors, spectrograms etc.) is also desirable. Research specialization preferred in one or more of the following fields: Spanish phonology, morphology and/or sociolinguistics (concentrating on Spanish in the US). Syntax will also be considered. Strong background and active research interests in theoretical linguistics. Teaching duties in undergraduate language and linguistics courses and in graduate Linguistics programs at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels. Must have Ph.D. by time of appointment. Teaching experience preferred; publications desirable. Native or near-native Spanish language skills. Possible interviews at MLA or LSA conventions.
