THE GATHIC WORLD LITTERATURE, PHILOSOPHY, TRADITION AND ITS IMPACT ON THE HISTORY OF IDEAS Bristol Plaza Hotel (Near Los Angeles) Costa Mesa California October 28, 29 and 30th 1994 INTRODUCTION Gathas are the words of Prophet Zarathushtra composed in poetic form. Its language is archaic, called Old Avestan. They form the core theology of the Zarathushtrian religion. The Gathas are the addresses to adherents as well as hynms of praise to Ahura Mazda. They are the bed-rock of Zarathustrian philosophy, ethics, wisdom, and way of life. They serve as a guide for righteous living. These songs were transmitted orally for centuries before being committed to a written form. Modern knowledge of the Gathas has come during the last hundred years, when it was realized that its language, grammar and syntax are similar to the Rig Vedic Sanskrit. The present conference follows the Gatha Colloquium held at Croydon UK during November 1993, uuder the auspices of The World Zorastrian Organization. This conference will bring Gathic scholars of international repute to North Arnenca, who will explore the Gathic vision in the context of its period, location and its cultural complex. The conference will throw light on the religious conception, view of the world embedded in the Gathic hymns, and their place in the history of ideas.
