I am trying to find the earliest occurrence of the term "socio-historical" in linguistic literature. The OED documents its earliest use as 1949. Please send the date and source of its occurrence to: cmlewisMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuesescva.esc.edu (internet) cmlewis
snyescva (bitnet) Thank you.
I would appreciate help in identifying languages in which nouns may show the same form of number with all enumerating numerals. Examples from English, which does not in general allow such num- ber invariance, include the noun 'head' in 'one head of cattle', 'two head of cattle', etc. and, more systematically, nouns com- pounded with numerals (cf. two-car garage, three-body problem, four-week institute, five-page summary, six-foot high). Refer- ences to reliable descriptions of the phenomenon would also be appreciated. Please send replies to the address below. I will post a summary. Almerindo E.
