This is a request on behalf of a student not on the Net who is doing a field study of Tibetan (Lhasa dialect) and has found very few published studies on the language. I would be very grateful to anyone who could send me bibliographical references to enmMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueumich.edu . Thank you. I'm currently researching the classification of nouns in Kiowa and I'm having trouble finding clear explainations of common number and collective nouns vs. singular nouns (especially in Class III). I'm also unclear about the distributive plural found in class IVc and whether or not there exists a true mass noun. I would appreciate if anyone could help me. Thank You, Jennifer van VorstMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
In a recent discussion over language policies in the Basque-l group, the following issue came up: The Basque Autonomous government grants one year paid leave for public servants who are not biligual to acquire Basque. This includes University Professors. Somebody remarked that it would seem hard for a researcher to give up research for a whole year in order to intensively learn Basque (a condition for this paid leave is that the language training be really intensive). It was remarked that Israel has (or at least used to have) a similar policy, where people were given a certain time off to learn Hebrew. The question I am posting is the following: Could someone provide information as to how the Israeli government deals or has dealt with the issue of providing researchers who are engaged in active research projects with time off for language instruction without interrupting their research? thanks for your attention, itziar lakaMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
A friend of mine in the Republic of Georgia, with little access to published materials, is interested in literature from the 80s and 90s on colour terms and linguistic colour systems in languages across the world. This is a topic I know nothing about. I will welcome any references to general works and particular investigations on the topic. I also did a search through the data base of LINGUIST but it did not give me the information I needed. Offprints and other papers will be welcome as well. I'll pass them on to my friend in Georgia (postal mail is not reliable). Thank you very much in advance.
