The University of Manchester is offering research posts for certain
departments in the Faculty of Arts. Applications are invited in

Research opportunities at the University of Manchester

As a leading international research institution and as part of its
continuing investment in quality, the University invites
applications for a series of research opportunities across a wide
range of disciplines. Candidates should have:

*outstanding research potential
*preferably completed a doctorate and have a demonstrable record
of achievement including publications.

The appointments will normally be tenable as Research
Fellowships.

Each appointment to a Research Fellowship will be made for a
fixed term of up to five years.

Appointments will normally be made on the research equivalent of
the Lecturer A or B scales (14,756-25,735 pounds per annum).

JOB OPPORTUNITY: Permanent Lectureship in French Language and
Linguistics, Department of Language and Linguistic Science, University of York.
The successful applicant for this post will be strongly committed to
French language teaching and will be an active researcher in some area of
linguistics (including applied linguistics, sociolinguistics or
psycholinguistics). Candidates should have native-like competence in
French, experience of recent language-teaching methods, and the capacity
to teach the French language from post 'A' level to honours degree level.
She or he will be responsible for degree level courses in French
language, will be expected to make some contribution in line with their
interests to teaching in linguistics or French linguistics and will play
an active research role in the department. The department is strongly
committed to research and recognizes the implications of that commitment.

The post is available from 1 Oct 1995.
salary within the lecturer A/B range: 314,756 -325,735
