University College London
Department of Phonetics and Linguistics
Chair of Experimental Phonetics or of Speech and Hearing Science

University College London intends shortly to make an appointment to the
established Chair of Experimental Phonetics, vacant upon the retirement of
Prof. Adrian Fourcin.

For this important post we are seeking a scientist with an outstanding
research record, able to lead teaching and research in one or more of the
following broad areas of interest and activity:
 spoken language engineering
 speech perception and language processing
 audiology and speech pathology

Ideally the successful candidate will have an awareness of related
developments in other areas of phonetics and linguistics. The Department
also has established Chairs in Phonetics and in Linguistics, and there are
currently two further Professors of Linguistics. We shall invite
applications particularly from scientists with a background in mathematics,
physics, engineering, or signal processing.

The Department has an outstanding international reputation and makes a
distinguished contribution at an international level of excellence to
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in all the areas
listed above. It has also initiated and is currently co-ordinating
Europe-wide research projects in each of them. Outside Europe, we are
engaged in ongoing collaboration with research institutes in China and the
United States.

Although the Chair has hitherto been in Experimental Phonetics, it may be
retitled, depending on the candidate selected, to e.g. the Chair of Speech
and Hearing Science(s).

At this stage we invite not formal applications but informal expressions of
interest. Please contact: Professor J.C.Wells, Department of Phonetics and
