PLEASE POST Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Department of Linguistics at the University of Toronto has a contractually-limited appointment for the 1994-95 academic year. Candidates must be qualified to teach a course in linguistic field methods, working with a language unknown to the students. Expertise in one or more of the following fields is also required: sociolinguistics, dialectology, morphology (advanced level), semantics, psycholinguistics, first/second language acquisition. The candidate must have a completed Ph.D. Experience in field work is required. Some teaching experience is desired. Applicants should submit a CV and letter. ADVANCE ANNOUNCEMENT University College London Department of Phonetics and Linguistics Chair of Experimental Phonetics or of Speech and Hearing Science University College London intends shortly to make an appointment to the established Chair of Experimental Phonetics, vacant upon the retirement of Prof. Adrian Fourcin. For this important post we are seeking a scientist with an outstanding research record, able to lead teaching and research in one or more of the following broad areas of interest and activity: spoken language engineering speech perception and language processing audiology and speech pathology Ideally the successful candidate will have an awareness of related developments in other areas of phonetics and linguistics. The Department also has established Chairs in Phonetics and in Linguistics, and there are currently two further Professors of Linguistics. We shall invite applications particularly from scientists with a background in mathematics, physics, engineering, or signal processing. The Department has an outstanding international reputation and makes a distinguished contribution at an international level of excellence to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in all the areas listed above. It has also initiated and is currently co-ordinating Europe-wide research projects in each of them. Outside Europe, we are engaged in ongoing collaboration with research institutes in China and the United States. Although the Chair has hitherto been in Experimental Phonetics, it may be retitled, depending on the candidate selected, to e.g. the Chair of Speech and Hearing Science(s).
