FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS 8TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AFRICAN LANGUAGES ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (ALASA 95): 12 - 14 JULY 1995 Papers are invited for presentation at the 8th biennial conference of ALASA being hosted by the Department of African Languages at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. The theme of the conference will be "Contemporary Issues in African Linguistics and Literature" Participants are requested to submit presentations reflecting on prevalent issues within the study of linguistics, literature and language teaching in African languages in the broadest sense. In order to focus sharply on the conference theme, a number of optional pre-conference seminars will also be presented. These seminars will take place on 10 and 11 July 1995, and will each comprise a 12-14 hour course on a specific topic to be announced in the second and final call for papers. Each seminar will aim at presenting * a state of the art description in a specific field, or * a detailed expos of a particular contemporary theory in a specific field. (Fields: African literature; African linguistics; The teaching of African languages.) Only a limited number of participants will be allowed to these seminars on a first come, first serve basis. Proposals are now awaited for (i) the presentation of a formal 20 min paper (+ 10 min discussion), and/or (ii) the organization and presentation of a 2 hour workshop. Potential speakers are requested to submit a typed two (2) page SUMMARY of the paper with enough detail to ensure acceptance after adjudication, before or on 15 MARCH 1995. Successful applicants will be notified early in April 1995 and will then be requested to submit a CAMERA READY ABSTRACT for publication purposes. The FINAL DATE for enrollment to the conference is 30 MAY 1995. Accomodation will be available in university student residences, guest houses, and hotels. Full details on the programme, keynote speakers, seminar topics, social events, transport, fees payable etc will be included in the second circular early in 1995.
