Dear Colleagues, In an Introduction to Sociolinguistics course, I usually play for my students a tape of some six or eight regional dialects of English, some from England and some from the United States. These are samples I have collected over time from commercial sources or by recording the occasional student who is not from the area in which we are located. However, as you might imagine, it is very difficult to find more than a few people to record; and I would like to extend the range of the samples I can use. Does anyone have in standard audio cassette format a collection of English dialect samples which s/he is willing to share, or know of a commercial source for such samples? Naturally, in this age of budget-cutting, cost is an issue.... Many thanks in advance; and of course, if people indicate an interest, I will post a summary. Louis B. Hi, I'm posting this message to ask if anyone knows of IBM software that would allow you to feed it recorded sound and then measure the sound (in terms of cycles per second, etc.). Please respond to my personal address and if there is interest I will post a summary.
