Positions Available Caterpillar Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of earthmoving equipment, is currently developing a state-of-the-art computer translation system. The Caterpillar Automatic Machine Translation (AMT) system includes a system of controlled English called Caterpillar Technical English. The technical writer's CTE input is monitored by linguistic software integrated into the authoring system. The controlled input is then translated by machine into the target languages. Caterpillar is currently seeking qualified individuals to help with the development and maintenance of this system. Candidates must possess skills in at least three of the following areas; Computational Linguistics Contrastive Linguistics (typology) Technical Writing (including electronic document delivery) Lexicography (preferred candidates will have heavy machinery experience) Semantic Domain Modeling Translations Heavy Equipment Project Development Preferred Candidates will have knowledge of one or more of the following areas: SGML Mechanical Engineering Automotive Electronics Publishing Teaching Unix (AIX) computing environments An M.A. or equivalent in an appropriate area is required.
