Greetings, I'm currently on a faculty exchange to Brigham Young University's Hawaii campus -- a tough assignment!!!! As happens frequently in these types of exchanges, I have been asked to teach a class that is not really central to my specializations. I need help in deciding upon a semantics textbook suitable for undergraduate English, TESL and linguistics majors. Also, I'd appreciate any suggestions for course content. Thank you, Bill Eggington BYU-Hawaii eggingtwMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuebyuh.edu
Dear Linguists! There is a wonderful search algorithm for English words based on phonetic properties of the searched items. It is called SOUNDEX. Essentially, it provides a way to conduct fuzzy searches and find everything which sounds somewhat like the entered words with a given degree of proximity. Does anybody know of similar algorithms for foreign languages? Has anybody done any customization of the original SOUNDEX written 25 years ago? Please reply directly or through the group. ______________________________________________________________ ________ / ____ /\ Greg Gouzev, Translations / /\__/_/ / Caterpillar Inc. / / / \_\/ Building AD180 / / / ______ 600 W. Dear linguists, A colleague and ex-student of mine - who is not on the list - intends to do a research on the subject of linguistic insecurity. She knows that this belongs to a broader framework, namely language attitudes. If anybody has any bibliographic suggestion about this subject, both theoretical and empirical, she would appreciate very much. If enough information is provided, we will give a summary for the netters. Thanks in advance.
