We are especially eager to encourage papers and presentations on topics such as the sociolinguistic construction of identity in terms of gender, age, education, ethnicity, regionalism, nationalism, multi-culturalism, and so on. We also wish to welcome theory and research from a wide variety of ways of studying language - as structure, discourse, text or talk. We are hopeful of having participants from linguistics, sociology, anthropology, communication, media studies, literary studies, history, psychology, politics, law, language studies, various areas of applied linguistics and discourse studies. There will be special thematic sessions on Language Studies on the Iberian Peninsula. If there is interest, we would be happy to entertain other regional area sessions or panels. Format: There will be plenary sessions on major topic areas each morning, followed by debate. Other sessions will be organized around sub-themes. In order to maximize participants' contact with others' research results and perspectives, participants will be asked to provide a copy of their paper, which will be reproduced for distribution and discussion. Continuing the interdisciplinary nature of previous RC 25 conferences, we invite papers from any field which are pertinent to the theme of the conference. The official languages of the conference are English and Portuguese, with simultaneous interpreters available for key sessions (at least), with the possible availability of interpreters for French and/or Spanish, based on demand. Deadline for Submission: There is no specific deadline for simple registration for the conference, although we are holding reservations in hotels and will have to release them around the end of January. If you wish to offer a paper, send the registration form which accompanies this message, along with a 250-word abstract, to the contact address. We have extended the deadline to December 15th, but will certain consider abstracts after that date, space permitting. You may send the abstract by e-mail, following up with the hard copy registration form by mail. Notification of acceptance will be confirmed by mid-January. Registration Fees and Payment: We are able to accept payment by bank transfer, credit card or personal check. For your convenience, we have listed approximate exchange rates with US dollars, but credit card and bank transfer payments will be made in escudos.
