Does anyone have a reference for the recently reported work done by Sally E.
Shaywitz and others at Yale Med School, on differences in brain activity
of men and women while interpreting written words into spoken form? The
research was widely reported in print and on public radio, and I thought the
periodical Science was mentioned, but I cannot locate any article actually
written by Shaywitz or anyone else involved in the research.

I will soon be doing some sociolinguistic interviews for which I plan on
using a Sony digital recorder (the TCD-D7). However, I still haven't
decided what type of microphone would be best. Given the nature of the
interviews, I thought it would be a good idea to use a wireless lavalier
microphone system. I would like very much to obtain some information from
anyone who knows something about good microphones or about a reliable

Hello

I have a student who would like to do her Honours thesis on the phonetics,
phonology and perception of Cantonese tones. I don't know much about
Cantonese tones, so I thought I'd ask the Linguist List for key references
we should use. I'll summarise for the list if it seems useful to do so.
