POSTGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES AT THE DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGE AND
LINGUISTICS, UMIST

The Department of Language and Linguistics at UMIST (Manchester) has
some funding to enable students to undertake research
in computational linguistics or follow a taught MSc course.

1. Research
Studentships paying tuition fees plus maintenance at the rate of 5050
pounds per year. Potential research topics include: example-based
machine translation; incremental and partial interpretation; the use
of constructive logics as a basis for semantics; acquisition and enhancement
of semantic resources for robust natural language analysis; knowledge
acquisition from corpora. Some teaching or laboratory supervision, probably
in the area of computing, will be required from successful candidates.

There are 2-3 studentships available for EU citizens (either of 1-year
duration for research MSc for those with a first-degree qualification,
or of 2-year duration for PhD for those with a Master's). There is also
1 studentship for overseas students, available for 1 year in the first
instance (successful candidates will be expected to apply for an
Overseas Research Studentship for subsequent years). Registration would
start in late September 1995, or in January 1996.

For all these studentships, previous knowledge of computational linguistics
is strongly preferred. Candidates are asked to indicate their competences
in computing, both as a foundation for their research and in support of
their teaching commitments.

2. Taught MSc
Bursaries of 1000 pounds towards the tuition fees for students on a
1-year taught MSc in Machine Translation, Natural Language Processing
or Translation Studies. No previous knowledge of computing is required
for these courses. All courses begin in late September 1995.

Those who have already applied to the department will automatically be
considered for these studentships and bursaries.

Mittwoch, 13. September, Besichtigung von Forschungslabors der
Gesellschaft fuer Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung (GMD) in St. Augustin-
Birlinghoven, anschliessend Wanderung im Siebengebirge und Weinabend in
Oberdollendorf/Koenigswinter.
