A few days ago I asked for "merry X-mas in Hawaiian" - it is _Mele Kalikimaka_, I was told. This is in fact, as many told me, simply "merry christmas" adapted to the phonological system of Hawaiian with its one liquid (r -> l), no /s/, and CV-syllable structure. "Probably a million people will write", Geoffrey S. Nathan (geoffnMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuesiu.edu) told me, and though not all that many has mailed me I still had a huge bunch of answers - I think it would take up too much space to mention everybody, but thanks a lot, all of you!
