Department of Linguistics UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LINGUISTICS ARABIC & SEMITIC LINGUISTICS The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a full-time, tenure-track (advanced) assistant professor of linguistics with specialization in Arabic and comparative Semitic linguistics, with a possible starting date of 6 January 1997, salary in conformity with qualifications. Requirements: Ph.D. in linguistics in hand with expertise in Arabic & Semitic linguistics; near-native fluency in both standard Arabic and English; a genuine interest and experience in the teaching of Arabic at all levels, with the ability to establish and coordinate an interdisciplinary undergraduate program in Arabic language and culture, including the supervision of teaching assistants, and a graduate program in Semitic linguistics; demonstrated interest and experience in teaching and research in GB syntax and morphology. Desirable: thorough knowledge of at least one variety of colloquial Arabic; experience in teaching field methods; ability to develop research grant proposals.
