Dear Linguists, Can anybody out there give me any references on English syllable structure and stress in Optimality? Replies directly to me please, and I will post a summary if there are enough responses. Thank you! Ana ParrondoMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
In English, spatial terms are often used to talk about temporal events, or to order events in time (e.g. "Christmas is ahead of us." "The war is behind us.") Primarily, the spatial terms used to talk about time in English capture front/back relations. My question is in several parts. 1. Are there any languages in which spatial terms are not imported into the domain of time? 2. Are there any languages that import spatial terms that use primarily up/down, left/right, or in/out or any relations other than front/back to talk about time. 3. In what other ways do languages differ drastically in the way they talk about the order of events in time?Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
