General Romani (often Romany) is an Indic language spoken in Europe (mostly central and eastern) by some 4-6 million Rom or Gypsies. Research on the language started as early as the mid-eighteenth century, when its Indic origin was discovered. Since the political transition in Eastern Europe there has been an upsurge of interest in Romani linguistics and Romani studies in general, and publishing activities have included grammars, dictionaries, and cultural magazines published partly in Romani. Volumes and the Romani Linguistics Conferences Working groups on language planning and lexicography have been active for some time now. A special issue of the Journal for the Sociology of Language, edited by Ian Hancock, was devoted to Romani (Romani Sociolinguistics, Mouton, 1979). Papers from a workshop on Romani elements in Gypsy ethnolects (so-called para-Romani) appeared in a collection edited by Peter Bakker and Marcel Cortiade (In the margin of Romani, Amsterdam, Institute for General Linguistics, 1991). The First International Conference on Romani Linguistics was held at the University of Hamburg in May 1993. Some of the contributions have been published in a volume edited by Yaron Matras (Romani in Contact. The History, Structure, and Sociology of a Language, Amsterdam, John Benjamins, 1995). The Second International Conference on Romani Linguistics took place in Amsterdam in December 1994. A proceedings volume is currently in preparation (edited by Peter Bakker, Yaron Matras, and Hristo Kyuchukov). 3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ROMANI LINGUISTICS CHARLES UNIVERSITY, PRAGUE, DECEMBER 1996 CALL FOR PAPERS The Third International Conference on Romani Linguistics will be held at the Charles University in Prague in December 1996.
