RESEARCH ASSISTANT The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is looking for a Research assistant to work under the direction of Dr. B. Plunkett on an ESRC-funded research project entitled: The Syntactic Acquisition of French Questions: A cross-dialectal comparison. The post offered is 50% of full-time (or equivalent) over 24 months starting 15th January 1997. The tasks of the Research Assistant will include checking and tagging the orthographic transcription of diary data from 3 native francophone children between the ages of two and four from distinct dialect areas. In addition the assistant will participate in syntactic and acquisition-theoretic analysis of the child-data relating to question formation and other wh-constructions. The person appointed will therefore need a native command of French and preference may be given to a native speaker of one of the dialect areas concerned. Although appropriate training will be provided where necessary, prior knowlege and or experience in one of the relevant areas will be a prerequisite to appointment. The salary offered is 14,317 pounds sterling (point 4 at Grade 1B) pro rata. The Department of Linguistics, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, announces a single vacancy (pending approval) for a Lecturer in Phonology with a strong secondary interest in Sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will have proven teaching ability and research interests in Phonology and Sociolinguistics, with an emphasis on the former. Ph.D. should be in hand or close to completion. Teaching is mainly at the undergraduate level but will also involve post-graduate supervision. In addition, staff members are expected to conduct scholarly research and contribute to administration. The Opening of One Faculty Position at Miyagi Gakuin Women's College The Department of English, Miyagi Gakuin Women's College, Sendai, Japan has one faculty position to be filled by a contract associate professor, assistant professor or lecturer as of April 1, 1997. The contract is 2 years but can be extended for two more years. Selections are to be made on an open competition basis, and anyone as long as he/she fulfills the requirements is urged to apply for the position. The applicant should hold an MA degree or equivalent in the field of applied linguistics, and have publications related with applied linguistics. The applicant of any nationality can apply if he/she is a native speaker of English and has taught English to Japanese. The applicant must have working knowledge of basic Japanese, and must be under the age of 40 as of April 1, 1997.
