THE 1997 MEETING OF THE LANGUAGE ORIGINS SOCIETY THE 13TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE LANGUAGE ORIGINS SOCIETY will be held at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (Czech Republic) from July 4 through July 8, 1997. It will be organized by Ivo Budil of the Institute of the Social and Political Sciences and housed in the Medical School Building. PROGRAM: The four-day academic program will include papers on all aspects of the origins and evolution of spoken, written, and signed languages, and on the morpholological and behavioral developments that contributed to or fostered the emergence of speech. The academic program will be interrupted on Sunday to allow for a local excursion. ABSTRACTS: Those who wish to present a paper should send a 300-word abstract to the organizers. Computer users are kindly requested to send in addition to a hard copy of their texts an electronic recording on 3.5" diskettes, preferably processed with WordPerfect or other convertible programs. The organizers also ask that those who can be reached electronically kindly indicate their e-mail address. Abstracts should be submitted by March 30, 1997. CALL for PAPERS **** Deadline: Jan. 31, 1997 **** ================================================== Society for Pidgin and Creole Languages ================================================== Place: London (University of Westminister) Date: June 26-28, 1997 Deadline for receipt of abstracts: January 31, 1997 ================================================== The Society for Pidgin and Creole Languages will meet on 26-28 June 1997 at the University of Westminister. Abstracts for a 20-minute paper on phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicon, social aspects of language, history of the discipline or any pertinent issue involving pidgin and creole languages are invited for anonymous review by a five member panel. Abstract: A single spaced one-page abstract. Please put the full title of the paper on the abstract, but do not put your name on the abstract. Format: Your name, address, affiliation, status (student, faculty), E-mail address, FAX, and phone number should appear on a separate page. Please also indicate whether you need audio-visual equipment (overhead projector, tape recorder, etc.). Membership : Membership in SPCL includes a subscription to the Journal of Pidgin & Creole Languages (only one member within the same household need subscribe to the journal). The cost for both membership and the journal is US $54.00 or Dutch guilder (Hfl.) 92.00 per year. Students may participate in the conference without subscribing to the journal, but they must be a member of the SPCL.
