XVIth SCANDINAVIAN CONFERENCE OF LINGUISTICS TURKU, 14 - 16 NOVEMBER 1996 CALL FOR PAPERS The graduate school Language contacts and communication, together with the Swedish department of Abo Akademi University and the department of General Linguistics at Turun Yliopisto, issues a call for papers, workshop organizers, and participants in the XVIth Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics (16:e nordiska lingvistmo"tet), to be held on the central university campus in Turku, Finland, November 14 - 16, 1996 (Thursday 10 AM - Saturday 5 PM). Papers can deal with any subtopic within linguistics, but this time the conference will have a special emphasis on grammaticalization and cognitive/functional linguistics. William Croft (University of Manchester) and Berndt Heine (University of Cologne) have so far accepted to be plenary speakers. Papers can be given in any language, but an international or Nordic language is strongly recommended. The time limit for papers is 20 minutes + 10 minutes for discussion. The organizers would like those interested in submitting an abstract for a paper to signal this as early as possible, before May 15. Above all, those interested in arranging a workshop on some special topic at the conference should contact the organizers as soon as possible. All conference participants are urged to register before August 30, 1996, using the address XVIth Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics, Svenska institutionen, Abo Akademi, FIN-20500 TURKU, or e-mail. Before that date, too, those wishing to give a paper should submit an abstract consisting of one page (A 4, preferrably on paper, ready to copy). The title of the paper, the name of the speaker, and his university address should be given on top of the page. All abstracts will be distributed in advance to the registered participants. The organizing committee will notify the potential speakers before September 15 whether the paper has been accepted. The participants are kindly asked to arrange their own lodging - a list of recommended hotels is enclosed. Meals can be taken in restaurants and university cafeterias in Turku. A conference dinner will be arranged on Friday 15 November in the Alabama restaurant. The conference fee, 300 FIM, or 250 FIM for members of the Nordic Association of Linguists and for students, or 200 FIM for student members, includes the abstracts booklet, the dinner on Friday night, and the central conference volume. Please note that possible banking fees should be added - if the entire conference fee has not been paid, the payment will have to be supplemented at the conference. The bank account number is Postipankki 800017-00038137 (postal account). Cheques require an additional fee of 50 FIM. For registration or payment after October 1 a late registration fee of 50 FIM will be added. Payment in November will raise this fee to 100 FIM, if it can be accepted at all.
