Positions Available (Redefinition of previously posted position announcements) Caterpillar Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of earthmoving equipment, is currently developing a state-of-the-art computer translation system. The Caterpillar Automatic Machine Translation (AMT) system includes a system of controlled English called Caterpillar Technical English (CTE). The technical writer's CTE input is monitored by linguistic software integrated into the authoring system. The controlled input is then translated by machine into the target languages. Caterpillar is seeking qualified individuals to help with the development and maintenance of this system. There are two major classes of position available: 1) linguist/lexicographer; and 2) linguist/computational linguist. 1. Candidates for the Linguist/lexicographer position must possess skills in linguistics PLUS at least three of the following areas: Technical Writing Translations Semantic Domain Modeling Heavy Equipment Terminology Lexical Semantics/Lexicography Project Management In addition, preferred candidates for this position will also have knowledge of one or more of the following areas: SGML Publishing Mechanical Engineering Unix (AIX) computing environments Automotive Electronics 2. Candidates for the Computational Linguist position must possess skills in the following areas: Linguistics Computational Linguistics Programming skills in C, C++ and LISP in a Unix environment In addition, preferred candidates will also have knowledge of one or more of the following areas: Management/design of large-scale production machine translation systems Data Base Administration An M.A. or equivalent experience in an appropriate area is required.
