New deadline is May 1, 1996. ************* CALL FOR PAPERS ************* TESOL Journal Special Issue on Learner Strategies and Styles Co-editors: Christopher Ely and Lucinda Pease-Alvarez The Autumn 1996 special issue will focus on language learning strategies and/or learning styles. We are particularly interested in articles that explore classroom teachers' work with their students. Some topics of interest are: -Classroom Insights: Case studies, personal reports, experiences, and views -Individual and cultural considerations Impact of cultural/educational norms and values on strategies/styles Role of cultural and individual differences -Students' perspectives Student self-knowledge Learning styles as perceived by students Strategy development (and student autonomy) Students' attitudes before, during, or after strategy training Dealing with students' reactions to strategy/style work -Strategy development in classroom settings Using textbook strategy material Developing strategy material Integrating strategy training with other learning activities Innovations and experiments in classroom strategy/style training -Research and assessment Investigating strategy learning, retention, and subsequent use Classroom research on learning styles Contributions are welcome in all departments: articles, tips from the classroom, reviews, and perspectives. [apologies if you receive this more than once] ***************************please post******************************* FORMAL GRAMMAR Prague August 10-11, 1996 in conjunction with the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information In 1996 the Eighth European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI VIII) is to be held in Prague, August 12-23. The ESSLLI Summer Schools have become a forum for work on formal grammar, encompassing the overlapping interests of work in formal linguistics, computational linguistics, and the role of logic in grammar formalisms. As at ESSLLI VII last year in Barcelona, the programme this year includes a conference on Formal Grammar to be held the weekend before the Summer School, which will provide a forum for contemporary research in this domain. Themes of interest include formal and computational phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics; logical methods in linguistics; and foundational, methodological and architectural issues in grammar. We invite e-mail submissions of abstracts for 30-minute papers (including questions and comments) addressing these themes. To facilitate anonymous review, the initial lines containing information concerning the author should be easily removable. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 1996. Notification of acceptance will be by the end of May. Final versions of papers are to be received by 7th July for inclusion in a proceedings to be distributed at the time of the Summer School.
