SECOND INTERNATIONAL COGNITIVE TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE, CT '97 Humanising the Information Age 25 - 28 August 1997 Venue: The University of Aizu, Japan supported by: The University of Aizu, Japan Center for Research in Journalism and Mass Communication, University of North Carolina, USA, (host of CT '99) Cognitive Sciences Centre, University of Southampton, UK City University of Hong Kong (host of CT '95) CONFERENCE THEME Problems and Praxis: Exploring and formulating methods for studying Cognitive Technology. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The First International Conference on Cognitive Technology (Hong Kong, 1995) stressed the need for a radically new way of thinking about the impact computer technology has on humans, especially on the human mind. Our main aim at that time was a consideration of these effects with respect to rendering the interface between people and computers more humane. Participants in the upcoming Second International Conference will expand on that effort by exploring a number of related areas in greater detail. Of primary concern is the need to establish clear and precise methods for studying how environmental characteristics condition the processes of cognitive formation. Within such a framework, empirical CT inquiries can be directed towards specific areas of problems, the more important ones of which are listed below. 1. Rethinking Progress: Towards a manifesto for the Information Age 2. Cognising at the Interface 3. Empowering Humans 4. Rethinking Education More information can be obtained from http://www.u-aizu.ac.jp/news/news.html.Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue

The conference will be situated at Duesseldorf, from February 26th - 28th 1997. The conference offers workshops, so-called "AGs", dealing with diverse aspects of the lexicon. I suggested a workshop with the following title : "Prototype Theory/Methodology and the Lexicon." This workshop will focus on two aspects : - response to prototype theory within European linguistics - applications of prototype theory within the field of lexicon research. I would like to invite colleagues interested in the topic and its discussion to either take actively part in the workshop (by a 30minutes talk and follow-up discussion) or to join the international and interdisciplinary audience of the workshop (by registrating at the local DGfS-Conference Commitee in Duesseldorf) . 25 years after the first publications of works on prototype theory (HEIDER (ROSCH) 1971,1972) the time is favourable for a re-evalutaion of the effects and consequences of this approach with regard to linguistic aspects of the lexicon (such as questions of semantics, phraseology, metapher, morphology etc.). At the same time a critical review of the origins of prototype theory is needed, as only "part of the story about protoypes and its methodology" has come across and has been included in controversial linguistic debate. It's time to look back (be it -in anger- or -in peace-) and to look out for the future role of prototype theory in linguistic methodology and theory. If this "abstract" has arisen your own interest in the workshop or in prototype theory as such, don't hesitate to contact me for further information. For those colleagues interested in delivering a talk on the topic deadline for registration for the workshop part (including name, title of the contribution, academic degree, name of institution, home and off. address) is June, 15th 1996. I hope to get international and interdisciplinary response to this call! Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
