tam2000.tamu.edu>Dear LINGUIST Subscribers: We want to express our appreciation to those of you who responded to our recent call for donations to the LINGUIST Development Fund; we are grateful to you for responding so quickly and generously. Unfortunately, we also need to alert you all to the status of the fund because contributions have fallen short of what we need to maintain the list. As some of you may remember, we need at least $8000 to maintain our current bare-bones staff of student editors. So far this year we have collected a total of $4040. Because we have $2000 left over from last year, we have $6040 of the necessary $8000. We need an additional $1960 just to sustain the list, so we must come to you again to ask for contributions. More individuals than ever have contributed something to LINGUIST this year, as you can see from the 1996 Contributors' List below. However, the individual amounts contributed have been lower. We suspect that this happened in part because in the spring we suggested that every subscriber might pay $10 in "annual dues." Since there are over 7000 subscribers to LINGUIST, we hoped that our goal would be met through a large number of small donations. However, our optimism got the better of us; only about 140 subscribers actually responded to our call. We are very grateful for those $10 contributions--it was extremely heartening to see how many subscribers promptly and graciously responded to our "dues request." But we are not yet at the point when LINGUIST can be sustained exclusively through these dues. Therefore, this time we are asking you to give whatever you can afford. We want very much to continue publishing the LINGUIST List and to develop the LINGUIST Network. To do so, we need your donations.
