 We are proud to announce the publication of SPEECHLAB, a multimedia
 CD-ROM on phonetics. Our particular thanks go to the members of the
 linguist list, who supported a survey we started some time ago.
 Your reactions encouraged and guided our work.
 We, that's "Media Enterprise", a young multimedia company founded
 by students. We appreciate your replies and comments. Especially
 we're looking for cooperation with institutes and authors, who are
 interested in the production of multimedia books. Contact us if you
 have ideas and are looking for a partner in the production! You

 On our ISDN server as well as on our WWW pages, we supply free
 demo versions of our programs. Seize the opportunity, have a look
 yourself and take part in the design of future releases by by

 Product description

 Do you know the phonetic difference between a tone and a sound? How do
 you, phonetically speaking, define a bang? The chapter about the acoustics
 of speech of our latest CD-ROM publication SPEECHLAB will give you,
 interactively of course, the answers to these and other questions.
 SPEECHLAB meets the most recent requirements of schools and universities
 toward teaching equipment. It is an easy-to-operate multimedia teaching
 software which will boost the attractiveness of your lessons, seminars
 or lectures. The only things you need are a computer that is operable
 with mulitmedia applications (e.g. a Laptop with a CD-ROM drive) and
 either an overhead or LCD-data-projector.

 SPEECHLAB offers you three interesting possibilities at a time:

 - a tutorial called "Basics of the physiology and acoustics of speech"
 - a basic speech analysis program
 - a bibliography

 The first component is an eventful tutorial explaining the basics of
 anatomy and physiology as well as providing some insight into the
 acoustic foundations of human speech. The first section of our teaching
 program deals in particular with the spectrographical method of analyzing
 speech, showing, on the basis of the "Referenz der deutschen Sprachlaute",
 the coherence between physiological processes and the acoustic phenomena
 linked to them, using videos, X-rays, spectrograms, sound and more.

 According to the motto "learning by doing", you can switch over to a
 different program processing speech signals either while doing the
 first component or after having completed it. With this program, speech
 samples either existing or recorded via microphone and sound card can be
 visualiised and analysed. This is possible during seminars and lectures as
 well as in private. The acoustic structure of sound can very well be
 described in the form of time signals, short time spectra or
 spectrograms. Thus, the second component of SPEECHLAB becomes an
 interactive means of teaching and learning.

 It is important for a multimedia application like SPEECHLAB to hint at
 the essential sources of special literature, as the available text often
 contains only basic information. This problem is taken into account with
 an independent data base comprising the most important literature - and,
 yet another exceptional feature of SPEECHLAB, most of the articles from
 'Phonetica', 'Language and Speech', 'Sprache-Stimme-Gehoer', 'Folia
 Phoniatrica' and 'Journal of Phonetics'. Every buyer of SPEECHLAB is able
 to continue using this data base, which can be supplemented, on their own
 home computer in order to manage their library at home or at university.

 Wir freuen uns, das Erscheinen des SPRACHLABORs bekanntgeben zu koennen,
 einer multimedialen CD-ROM zur Phonetik. Ein besonderer Dank geht dabei
 an die Mitglieder der linguist list, die uns vor einiger Zeit bei einer
 Umfrage unterstuetzt haben und damit aktiv an der Gestaltung des Produkts
 beteiligt waren.
 Wir, das ist "Media Enterprise", eine junge Multimedia-Firma, die
 von Studenten gegruendet wurde. Wir freuen uns ueber jede Rueckmeldung
 und Kommentare. Insbesondere suchen wir die Zusammenarbeit mit Instituten
 oder AutorInnen, die an der Produktion von multimedialen Buechern

 interaktive Antwort. Das SPRACHLABOR bietet Ihnen eine multimediale
 Einfuehrung in die Welt des Sprechens. Im SPRACHLABOR sind die modernsten
 Anforderungen, die Schulen, Fachhochschulen und Universitaeten an Lehrmittel
 stellen, umgesetzt.
 Es handelt sich um ein einfach zu bedienendes multimediales Unterrichts-
 mittel, das die Attraktivitaet ihres Unterrichts bzw. ihrer Vorlesungen und
 Seminare um ein Vielfaches steigern wird! Sie benoetigen lediglich einen
 multimediafaehigen Computer (z.B. Laptop mit CD-ROM Laufwerk) und Darstel-
 lungsgeraete (LCD-Panel fuer Overheadprojektor bzw. LCD-Datenprojektor).

 Gleich mit drei interessanten Komponenten kann das SPRACHLABOR aufwarten:

 - Das Tutorial "Grundbegriffe der Physiologie und Akustik des Sprechens"
 - ein einfaches Sprachsignalverarbeitungsprogramm
 - eine Literaturdatenbank

 Ein Einblick in die Grundlagen des Sprechens wird Ihnen durch unser Tutorial
 "Grundbegriffe der Physiologie und Akustik des Sprechens" vermittelt.
 Insbesondere wird hier auf das Verfahren der Spektrographie eingegangen.
 Dabei werden ueber eine Referenz der deutschen Sprachlaute physiologische
 Vorgaenge und damit verbundene akustische Phaenomene durch Videos,
 Roentgenbilder, Spektrogramme, Audiodateien und noch mehr dargestellt.

 Nach oder waehrend der Bearbeitung dieses ersten Teiles kann man im
 Stile des "Learning by doing" in ein Sprachsignalverarbeitungsprogramm
 wechseln, mit dem vorhandene oder ueber eine Soundkarte und Mikrophon
 aufgenommene Sprechproben untersucht werden koennen. Das ist sowohl
 waehrend der Seminare bzw. Vorlesungen als auch im "Stillen Kaemmerlein"
 zu Hause moeglich. Damit kann man die akustische Struktur eines Lautes
 hervorragend als Zeitsignal, Kurzzeitspektrum oder Spektrogramm dargestellt
 werden. Dieser zweite Teil des Sprachlabors ist somit ein aktives Lern-
 und Lehrinstrument.

 Wichtig fuer eine multmediale Applikation dieser Art ist der Verweis auf
 wesentliche Literaturquellen, da im vorhandenen Text nur grundsaetzliche
 Informationen enthalten sind. Diese Aufgabe wird durch eine eigenstaendige
 Literaturdatenbank geloest, die die wichtigsten Literaturangaben enthaelt
 - und, eine Besonderheit, auch die meisten Artikel der Zeitschriften
 'Phonetica', 'Language and Speech', 'Sprache-Stimme-Gehoer', 'Folia
 Phoniatrica' und 'Journal of Phonetics' umfasst. Jeder SPRACHLABOR-Besitzer
 kann diese offene Literaturdatenbank auf seinem eigenen Computer weiter
 nutzen und damit seine Haus-oder Fachbereichsbibliothek verwalten.
