 Call For Papers

 The Arabic Linguistics Society and
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

 announce the

 Twelfth Annual Symposium on
 Arabic Linguistics

 to be held in

 Champaign, Illinois

 March 6-8, 1998

 Keynote Speakers

Joseph Aoun (University of Southern California)
Ahmed Moutaouakil (University Mohammed V, Rabat, Morocco)

Papers are invited on topics that deal with the application of current
linguistic theories and analyses to Arabic. Research in the following
areas of Arabic linguistics is encouraged: grammatical analysis (phonology,
morphology, syntax, semantics), sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics,
discourse analysis, historical linguistics, etc.

Persons interested in presenting papers are requested to submit a
one-page abstract giving the title of the paper, a brief statement of
the topic, and a summary clearly stating how the topic will be
developed (the reasoning, data, or experimental results to be
presented). Authors are requested to be as specific as possible in
describing their topics. Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail where
possible. The top lines of the message should contain the author's
name, affiliation, address, phone number, e-mail address, and the
title of the paper. The body of the abstract should then follow after
4 blank lines. The heading will be omitted before it is sent to the
members of the paper selection committee. If submitted by mail, both a
disk copy and a hard copy are to be included. Names are not to appear
on the abstract; instead, a 3X5 card with the above information should
be enclosed. Twenty minutes will be allowed for each presentation.

1998 ALS membership dues ($15 faculty, $10 students) and conference fees
($15 preregistered) are to be received before consideration of all abstracts.
Membership dues are, of course, non-refundable; conference fees are
refundable, if requested, only to those whose papers are not accepted.

Deadline for Receipt of Abstracts

November 30, 1997

Abstracts and other inquiries should be addressed to:
Tessa Hauglid, 759 West 1800 North, West Bountiful, UT 84087, USA
Phone: (801) 298-3621, e-mail:

The Department of English Studies at the University of Alicante (Spain) has
decided to publish a special issue of its REVISTA ALICANTINA DE ESTUDIOS
INGLESES (R.A.E.I.) which will be devoted entirely to relevance theory and
edited by Dr. Jose Mateo Martinez and myself.
R.A.E.I. is currently received in many English Departments all over
the world, and the quality of its published material has also been underlined
on many occasions.
The volume will be written in ENGLISH, and will follow a book-like
layout. For instance, there will be only one bibliography section at the end
of the book covering all the bibliographies of the articles.
The provisional title of the volume is

 Relevance and Interpersonal Communication

but manuscripts dealing with other types of communication (fictional and/or
media communication, for instance) will also be accepted.
Those interested in sending a manuscript to be considered for its
publication in this special volume should send two printed copies,
double-spaced, plus a computer disk (3'5'') with a exact copy (PC compatible)
of the manuscript, preferably in WordPerfect (5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 7.0). The
deadline for the submission of manuscripts is October 31st, 1997 (maybe even
efew days later if there is a justified delay). R.A.E.I. will not accept
articles which have also been sent to other Journals for publication.

Further instructions on how to present the manuscript are
available from the editor.

The authors whose manuscripts are selected for the volume will
receive a free copy of the volume.

Please, send your manuscripts to:
