Gnanadesikan Pages:x + 240 Price:$16 plus S/H ($3 for domestic, $4 for foreign) Checks should be made out to GLSA and sent to GLSA, Linguistics, South College, UMass, Amherst, MA 01003, USA. Other acceptable payment methods are; International postal money order, bank draft drawn from a bank with US affiliate, and travelers checks (doubly signed). Abstarct: This work proposes a series of ternary scales to replace certain traditionally binary features. The focus is on the Inherent Voicing Scale (Voiceless Obstruent, Voiced Obstruent, Sonorant), which replace [voice] and [sonorant]. Applications are made to assimilations, neutralization, and consonant mutation, providing natural accounts for a number of previously opaque processes. Other proposed scales are Consonant Stricture (stop, fricative, approximant/voiced) and Vowel Height (low, mid, high), which replace [continuant], [consonantal], [high] and [low].Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
